What is wide format bubble-jet printing?

Whilst there are many types of printing, for most purposes there are really only three types of printing:

  1. Offset printing;
  2. Digital printing; and
  3. Wide format bubble-jet printing.

 

Offset and digital printing

Offset printing is the traditional printing method that uses wet ink and large machines, and is associated with a great deal of mess and noise.

Digital printing is a more modern process, that uses:

  • Dry ink (commonly called 'Toner") that is NOT messy;
  • Smaller machines that are quiet.

Digital printing is a bit like a photocopying, but the quality is as good as (if not better than) traditional offset printing; so, quality is not an issue (and we have heaps more about our quality printing below). The advantages of digital printing are:

  • You can have exact runs, where as offset printing is normally provided in set quantities (e.g.: 250, 500, 1,000, 2,500, etc);
  • Each printed page can be different from the page before it and the page after it, where as offset printing has each page the same.

OK. So we know what digital printing is. But what is bubble-jet printing?

 

 

Wide format bubble-jet and ink-jet printing

Wide format bubble-jet printers (also termed ink-jet printers) are similar to office and home printers, but industrial-sized.

The above image shows the size of the press, and the below image displayes the size of the ink-jets. The machine IS NOT a standard office printer — the Océ Colourwave is a full-sized industrial press.

The resolution is not as good as traditional offset presses and the better-known digital presses (both those types of presses print at 300 dots per inch), as bubble-jet printers print at about 225 dots per inch. However, our industrial strength ink-jet press is almost certainly far superior to the normal printers you find at offices (about 150 dots per inch).

Therefore, if you want an almost photo quality product, then you should select a digital or offset primnted product.

If, however, you only want one or two of your file printed, or if you cannot afford the digitally- or offset-printed product, then the bubble-jet wide format press will provide what you want.
